H’ART Museum goes all out during Amsterdam 750th anniversary celebrations
18 September 2024
Today, H’ART Museum in Amsterdam announces a special program being prepared in celebration of the 750th anniversary of the Dutch capital. The museum reveals that it will be going all out with not one, but two unique anniversary exhibitions. This ‘diptych’ will not only showcase and explore the well-known Amsterdam of Rembrandt, but will also kick off with a colorful, rich, and surprising artistic ode to the birthday city. For this, H’ART Museum is collaborating with multiple partners and museum institutions both domestically and internationally.
H’ART Museum will start the celebration program with the exhibition ‘Happy Birthday Amsterdam’ (December 4, 2024 – March 16, 2025), where Amsterdam as an art city is celebrated. The city, long known as a hub of free and creative spirit, has been a cultural breeding ground for artists from all over the world. ‘Happy Birthday Amsterdam’ presents a rich and vibrant collection of art by 75 artists, from both past and present. It is an ode to the city and the creators who lived, worked, and stayed there – some for their entire lives, others just passing through – but all uniquely contributing to the image we now have of the city celebrating its anniversary. The collection is remarkable, diverse, and colorful, and not only surprising but also recognizable to lovers of both art and Amsterdam. From Karel Appel to works by Marina Abramović, and from Johan Cruijff through the eyes of Marlene Dumas to a sensory experience of the city. This exhibition is being created in collaboration with several (museum) institutions and partners. De Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed is the main lender and partner.
‘At Home in Rembrandt’s Amsterdam’ (working title) (April 9 – August 24, 2025) constitutes the program’s second anniversary exhibition and the second show created in collaboration with The Leiden Collection, one of the largest and most important private collections of Dutch 17th century art founded by Franco-American collector Dr. Thomas S. Kaplan and his wife Daphne Recanati Kaplan. Featuring 75 works — including seventeen paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) that will be displayed together for the very first time — the exhibition will tell a unique story about Amsterdam and the lives of its seventeenth-century residents, as seen through the eyes of some of its most consequential painters. Other Dutch masters and prominent fijnschilders whose work is featured in the exhibition include Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris, and Maria Schalcken.
H’ART Museum is grateful for the indispensable support of founder VriendenLoterij, partners Heineken, ELJA Foundation, and ABN AMRO, as well as the funds VSBfonds, the Cultuurfonds, VandenEnde Foundation, Gieskes-Strijbis Fonds, the Municipality of Amsterdam, Fonds21, and the H’ART Museum Friends.
Until Sunday 10 November, the Kandinsky exhibition can still be visited. This widely acclaimed exhibition will in all likelihood be able to welcome its 100,000th visitor in the coming month.
