Installation of the Only Vermeer in Private Hands Marks the Final Step Before the Opening of ‘From Rembrandt to Vermeer, Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection’

3 April 2025

On view from Wedensday April 9, 2025.

Today in the galleries of H’ART Museum, staff carefully unpacked Young Woman Seated at a Virginal (ca. 1670–75) by Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675). The only painting by the artist in private hands, it is the final work to be installed in the major exhibition From Rembrandt to Vermeer, Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection. In a symbolic gesture marking the start of the show, this picture was uncrated next to a self-portrait of 1634 by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669).

To celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, From Rembrandt to Vermeer showcases various aspects of daily city life in the 17th century. All seventy-five paintings on display come from The Leiden Collection, founded by Thomas S. Kaplan and Daphne Recanati Kaplan. Featuring no fewer than 18 Rembrandts and many other important Dutch pictures, the exhibition concludes with Vermeer’s exquisite scene, which he created at the end of his life.
